Wat Naluang is located on a mountain in the north-eastern province of Udon Thani, Thailand. As mountain weather tends to change quite suddenly, be sure to check the latest at this link. Be prepared for those cold nights and mornings.
On the way up to Wat Naluang, we will pass through Ban Naluang village which is located at the foothills. The map below shows the two nearest airports at Udon Thani and Vientiane as well as the border town of Nongkhai. The weather link above is based on the weather station located at Ban Nam Mong.
Travelling by Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we have two options. One is to buy a Fly-Thru connecting ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Udon Thani, transiting at Bangkok. Our baggage will be tagged through to Udon Thani. On the return leg, tag baggage directly to Kuala Lumpur and proceed to clear immigration at Udon Thani for the outbound sector, transiting at Bangkok.
The other option is to fly to Vientiane, Laos, and then take a bus or hire a taxi from Wattay International Airport to the immigration checkpoint on the Laotian side of the Mekong River. Upon exiting the Laos immigration, look for the booth located on the left to buy a bus ticket for the short trip to Thailand via the Friendship Bridge. The immigration office at Nongkhai, Thailand, allows only 14 days’ stay compared with the usual 30 days. A return journey via Vientiane provides an excellent opportunity for shopping and sight-seeing in Laos.
